A bridge had been planned here since the 19th century but construction didn't start until the 1920s, and the structure was completed in 1932. After several possible designs, one from the famed McKin, Mead & White architectural firm was chosen. This design included a drawbridge that was used up until the 1960s. A large repair project will soon be undertaken by the Federal Highway Administration to ensure this bridge remains a pillar of Washington, D.C.
