Downtown Washington, D.C. might have looked very different if some planned transportation projects had come to fruition. In the 1950s, there was a vision to create an "Inner Loop" with branch highways stretching out to the Capital Beltway and beyond. This would have cut through existing neighborhoods and changed the complexion of Washington, D.C.
