Initial Route of the Inner Loop from 1955

A great number of changes would come after the original plans were put in place. The "North Leg" of the freeway that originally cut through what is now Dupont Circle, U Street, and Truxton Circle, was changed to travel through a tunnel underneath K Street NW. An additional bridge crossing the Potomac River was also added to handle the increasing traffic, known as the Three Sisters Bridge.
