After years of discussion, in 1982 the federal goverment decided to redevelop Union Station, a project which spanned several years. Union Station opened its new doors in 1988.

This redevelopment included the construction of a parking garage, which also serves as a bus terminal. Before the garage was built, according to a report by Sverdrup and Parcel, "consideration was given to facility use by taxis, van pools, tour buses, intercity buses, WMATA buses, charter buses, rental cars, employee parking, and Northeast Corridor Rail ridership vehicle parking and future commercial users."

Today, Union Station is a central location for transportation in the district, as well as one of the most dependable places to park in the city.
