30 Years Too Early

Dupont Circle 006

View of Dupont Circle and Connecticut Ave with streetcar tunnels emerging.

Only the Dupont Circle Underground would be built as part of the 1944 plan. Completed in 1949, it would only be operational for about a decade before all D.C. Streetcars were replaced by buses. D.C. would have to wait over 30 years before other subway tunnels came to fruition, coming as a result of WMATA and Metrorail.

Public Transit 002

Buses had completely replaced streetcars by 1962, 14 years before the Metrorail would start running.
