Description

Photographs of the building of the Francis Pool Bathhouse and rebuilding of the pool at Francis Pool located at 2435 N Street, NW in the West End area of D.C. The original Francis Pool opened in 1928 and was one of two pools for African-American Washingtonians built by the city. It was state of the art for the time and included a high dive. It was highly popular up through World War II, and then its usage started to decline somewhat. It eventually fell into disrepair leading to the building of a new pool and bathhouse. It is now once again a popular pool in the city for use by all Washingtonians.
